Acai Berry Kills Cancer Cells, says Study

Every now and then a new pill comes on the market that promises to be the magic bullet to 1,000’s of human ailments.  Many of those pills are dervived from a natural plant, such as grapefruit, spinach and blackberries.  I have always wondered instead of taking the pill, why not eat the plant or fruit itself?  In some circles it’s called nutritionism.

Coined by  Gyorgy Scrinis, Nutritionism is an ideology that assumes that it is the scientifically identified nutrients in foods that determine their value in the diet.  Think about the vitamin C in citrus, the Calcium in milk and the Omega 3’s found in fish meat.

Today Acai is being touted for it’s powerful fight against cancer cells in a university study.  Published in 2006 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study showed extracts from acai (ah-SAH’-ee) berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Acai berries are already considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants,” Talcott said. “This study was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries.”

It would be great if the cure for some forms of cancer were found in the fruit of the acai berry, but I want to promote that it should be the fruit and not the single health ingredient that should be analyzed.  Eat whole fruits and veggies along with other foods and watch how the benefits of those foods makes you feel better over time.
