Acai Berry and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The health benefits of Acai Berry are growing faster than bloggers can write them.  If you were to spend just five minutes on the web you would know that Acai Berry will, “help you lose 200 pounds, smooth your skin and have you looking like Brad Pitt and Angelna Jolie, for just $2.95 shipping and handling!”  I am kidding of course, but I have decided to make this site more focused on popular culture and medical research of the Acai Berry.

The question we are pondering today, how effective is the acai berry in dealing with irritable bowel syndorme? Irritable Bowel Syndrome is described as a constellation of symptoms; however, the diagnosis is often one of exclusion after considering other etiologies for similar symptomatology.  Medical researchers, Arthi Sanjeevi and Donald F. Kirby have concluded:

There are anecdotal reports of impressive response to the fruit of Euterpe oleraceae (commonly known as acai berry that has been demonstrated to exhibit significantly high antioxidant capacityin vitro, especially for superoxide and peroxyl scavenging), but there are no published clinical trials thus far evaluating clinical response in IBS.

While the acai berry may work to acheive various health benefits in the body, working on Irritable Syndrome is not one them, at least not by modern medical practices.  Know your supplements and always study what is fact and what is wishful thinking.

The Acai is going to have some stiff competition really soon. Have you guys heard about the Maqui berry yet? It boast almost 3 times the free radical fighting power of the Acai!

I don’t think it helps with IBS either though…
